Less than a hundred and fifty years ago, our nation was involved in an inner conflict never seen before or since. I will not hope to describe the horrors and tragedies, the sorrow and sadness that fell upon our land like a heavy, black cloud. One can sense the tension, the intensity of that era, while reading the history. Cannons, muskets, horses running and the cries of men dying in fields sown with the bodies of the dead are seemingly audible.

Go to a field on a foggy, early morning and it will seem there is still an army silently moving about. In mid-day, you can almost smell the dust and acrid smoke of burnt, black powder and feel the heat beneath your feet. Then, as the sun slowly falls below the horizon, there is a gentle breeze; a night bird sings and all is peace and calm again.

It all happened long ago but lingers in a very special place in the hearts and souls of the descendants. This was not a war of hatred, but was simply another conflict of political makings, as are most wars. It was a time to choose an agenda, to give all for that cause and thousands did just that.

When General Lee chose to sign the surrender at Appomattox, he only conceded a military formality. He did so, that the noble Confederacy would not suffer further, fully realizing that Southerners would forever remain dedicated and faithfully acknowledge those who stood boldly gallant and sacrificed all. It is no wonder that Southern dignity and principles live on. Hurrah for all of us ol' Rebs, for this is our Redemption. These songs are from us to ya'll, folks.
